Hamilton police say an engaged couple embroiled in a landlord−tenant dispute had been shot lifeless as they fled their attacker on Saturday and “are really harmless victims.”
Sgt. Steve Bereziuk says a 27−12 months−previous feminine academic assistant and a 28−12 months−previous male electrician had been shot lifeless simply outdoors the house they shared within the neighbourhood of Stoney Creek. Their names haven’t been launched.
Bereziuk says the 57−12 months−previous suspect is a landlord who barricaded himself within the residence for hours after the couple died whereas police negotiators tried to resolve the scenario peacefully.
Bereziuk says he later fired photographs from the house, prompting an unspecified interplay with metropolis police.
The suspect finally died and his loss of life is now being probed by the Particular Investigations Unit, Ontario’s police watchdog.
Bereziuk says not one of the individuals concerned had been recognized to police, an element he says makes the scenario a little bit extra stunning.
“These are usually not those who this could occur to,” Bereziuk stated of the victims on Sunday in a televised press convention from the scene.
“They’re not concerned in any degree of criminality or way of life which will result in an incident like this. They’re really harmless victims, hardworking individuals, younger individuals. They had been engaged to be married. And it is a very tragic incident.”
Bereziuk says there have been a number of registered handguns and rifles in the home. He stated police anticipated to be on scene for a lot of the day.
